Best Thermal Baths Near the Austrian Border: An Honest Comparison

The Austrian-Hungarian border region sits on one of Europe's richest geothermal zones, and both countries have built serious spas on top of it. But they're all quite different. Some are medicinal, some are pure fun, and the prices vary wildly depending on which side you're on. Here's what you actually need to know.

The Hungarian Side

Bükfürdő (Bük): Serious Medicinal Water

20-30 km from the border. From Oberwart, you're there in 30 minutes.

Bükfürdő has 34 pools across a 14-hectare complex, but the real draw is the water. It's officially certified as medicinal, drawn from four wells with unusually high concentrations of alkaline bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, and fluorine. The water is thick with a distinctive yellow tint. This is not a gimmick. People come here specifically for joint problems, musculoskeletal issues, and inflammatory conditions.

Entry: Around 6,500-7,650 HUF (roughly €16-19). Weekday mornings are cheaper. Students and children pay about half.

Best for: Anyone who wants genuine Thermalbad therapy, not just warm water and a swim.

Downside: The medicinal section feels clinical, and the adventure pools won't compete with Loipersdorf for family fun.

Sárvár: Two Springs, Two Experiences

About 40 km from the border. Roughly 45 minutes from the Schachendorf-Bucsu crossing.

Sárvár draws from two separate thermal springs. The first, at 1,200 metres deep, comes out at 43°C and treats joint disorders and post-injury rehabilitation. The second goes down 2,000 metres, hits 83°C, and has such high sodium content that the spa produces its own Sárvár Thermal Crystal Salt from the evaporation process.

The facility is clearly split: a medical section, a recreational area with pools and a 106-metre water slide, and a sauna world with Finnish saunas, steam baths, and Kneipp pools.

Entry: Around 6,300-7,600 HUF (roughly €16-19). Peak season (weekends, school holidays) at the higher end.

Best for: Couples wanting relaxation and recreation mixed, or families who want slides without losing the thermal character.

Downside: Further from the border than Bük, and the town of Sárvár itself is quiet.

Hévíz: The Thermal Lake (Worth the Drive)

About 200 km from Vienna. A 2.5-3 hour drive. Not a trip you'd do on a whim.

Hévíz is the world's largest biologically active natural thermal lake. Not a pool. A lake. The spring itself pushes out water at 38.5°C from a cave 38 metres below. In summer the lake temperature sits around 33-36°C; in winter it drops to 22-25°C, which still feels warm when the air is freezing. You float surrounded by water lilies, with mineral-rich water constantly feeding from below. Nothing else like it exists anywhere.

Winter is the best time to visit. Steam rises off the lake surface when temperatures drop below freezing. A standard 3-hour ticket costs around 4,500 HUF (check current prices on their website, as rates change seasonally). Summer runs higher, typically 5,000-6,000 HUF depending on duration and ticket type.

Best for: Anyone who wants a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you only visit one Therme in Hungary, make it this one.

Downside: It's far. No slides, no adventure features. Kids may get bored after 30 minutes.

The Austrian Side

Therme Loipersdorf: The Big Resort

In Styria, no border crossing. About 165 km from Vienna, 60 km from Graz.

The full resort experience: multiple pool areas, a sauna village (included in every ticket), waterslides, and separate zones for quiet relaxation and family fun.

Entry: Day ticket around €44.50 for adults. Weekend surcharge of €11.50. A 4-hour ticket runs about €35.60.

Best for: Families who want waterslides and a polished package without crossing a border.

Downside: 2-3x the price of Hungarian baths. The water is warm, but it's not the same calibre of medicinal Therme you find across the border.

Heiltherme Bad Waltersdorf: Quiet and Grown-Up

About 60 km east of Graz. No border crossing.

Noticeably calmer than Loipersdorf. Nine saunas, thermal pools, and a generally older, quieter crowd. Open until 10 or 11 PM most nights, making it a solid evening option.

Entry: Day ticket around €40.50.

Best for: Couples wanting calm thermal relaxation. Think of it as the anti-Loipersdorf.

Downside: Nothing for children. Price is still steep compared to Hungarian options.

Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg: Built for Families

In Burgenland, near the Hungarian border. About 120 km south of Vienna.

Unapologetically designed for families. Austria's longest water slide at 270 metres, a 202-metre virtual reality slide (the world's longest of its kind), a wave pool, a wild river, and dedicated baby and toddler areas. The thermal water is genuine, but the vibe is full-on family fun.

Entry: Around €42.50 for adults, €29.40 for children 6-15, €21.40 for under 6. Sauna surcharge of €6 for ages 15+.

Best for: Families with kids under 12 who need a full day of entertainment in warm water.

Downside: Not relaxing. At all. If you don't have kids with you, go somewhere else.

The bottom line: If you want genuine medicinal water at a fair price, cross the border to Bükfürdő. If you want a fun day out with kids, Loipersdorf or Lutzmannsburg. If you want something you'll tell people about for years, drive to Hévíz.

Getting There from Austria

All Hungarian baths are accessible via well-maintained roads. Border crossings are quick (Schengen, no passport checks). Fuel is cheaper on the Hungarian side. Most baths accept card payments in HUF, but the exchange rate at the ticket desk is usually poor if you try to pay in EUR. Withdraw forints from an ATM before you go.
